sharing stages & mustachioed glory

We have a few shows before the holiday season sweeps down and eclipses us all with hectic merriment, and we’re very proud to be sharing the stage with several fantastic bands, new and old. It’s a rare honour to open for a band that has influenced the way we make music, and it’s happening twice in the next month! Plus we get to see some old friends, and help out with two good causes: prostate awareness and the unfortunate plight of John’s mustache. Yep, next Thursday (Nov 29th) we’ll be on-stage at the Great Hall, which is literally a great…    read more.

we love to hit the boards

We’ve had a residency at the Cameron House — every Wednesday through the month of October — and it has been a whiskey-fueled onslaught of good times, hanging out, and occasionally making music. We’ve had two special guests at each show, and it has been a truly amazing time hosting some of our good friends and favourite performers at our shows. This past show with Shawn Clarke and Graham Nicholas was a perfect blend of sensitive finger-strummed folk along with dancehall hootenanny folk. Last week with MJ Cyr and The Morals walked the tightrope from intricate looped rhythms to some…    read more.

someday we hope to achieve kardashian-level publicity…

With our official album release only a few scant weeks behind us, we’ve been rolling in sweet sweet album reviews and chortling in the same fashion as Scrooge McDuck swimming through his vault of gold coins. It’s been a great autumn so far! Our very heartfelt thanks to any and all folks who review albums in general, and ours in particular. Here’s a round-up of what’s being said about “in the year you were born”… 500 KHZ (our first review…& en francais!) — “L’occasion était idéale pour découvrir les chansons de leur nouvel album, In The Year You Were Born….    read more.

LIVE REVIEW: buyingshotsforbands.com

Graydon James & the Young Novelists Celebrate Their Album Release at the Horseshoe Graydon James & the Young Novelists put together a great bill to celebrate their release of In the Year You Were Born. And to add to the great bill, the band made the atmosphere so welcoming by offering tea. Graydon James fronts this band with Alex Dodd on keys, Shawn Jurek on bass, John Law on guitar, Mike Paddags on drums and Laura Spink singing backup vocals. The band plays feel good folk/roots music and attracted a good-sized crowd to help celebrate their album release. The band…    read more.

the tour is over & autumn begins

There is something very legit about playing in a theatre, with seating and everything. Especially when the sound system is absolutely incredible; our show at the Neptune Theatre in Halifax was the best live sound we’ve ever experienced! We also got to meet the lovely and talented folks from Three Little Birds and from Soho Ghetto, and hear them play in the acoustically jaw-dropping goodness of the ol’ Neptune. Then we spent the night club-hopping on Argyle Street and posed with Rachel from Soho Ghetto in a photo for our new band project, tentatively titled Girl & the Plaids. girl…    read more.

east coast sampler: moncton, sackville, charlottetown, cape breton, halifax…

Well somehow Saturday night at Plan B in Moncton was even better than Friday night, and not just because the singalong was great, but we met a gazillion new friends (numbers approximate) and there are pictures from the “after party” that are perfect for my use as blackmail. We were up relatively late on Sunday (the crack of 11AM) and made the slow sojourn to Sackville, NB to play a matinee-style show at the Bridgestreet Cafe at 4PM. It is impossible to predict what will happen at shows on tour, but we definitely didn’t expect Bry Webb from The Constantines…    read more.

so long fredericton, hello moncton

Dolan’s Pub in Fredericton was an experience. The patio was full and the room was almost empty, but as we played everyone came in from the patio to see what the hullaballoo was all about. By the time we got to the singalong section of “in your defence” the crowd was full and pumped and we got another awesome crowd participation experience. The east coast loves to sing along! The next day was technically a day off, but we had a radio interview/performance at CHMA (campus radio for Mount Allison) in Sackville, NB and we needed to do laundry. We…    read more.

& then we traveled from montreal to fredericton…

The Saturday nights in Trois-Rivieres are raucous, to be sure. We ate pizza at 2AM, then I was up at 8AM to send e-mails at the local coffee shop, and brought back some coffee at 10AM…there is no faster way to become a venerated hero to your bandmates than to bring them pizza late at night and coffee in the morning! I rode that wave for about 30 minutes and then they were back to making fun of me as per usual. We left The Strumbellas, with many long hugs goodbye. They were going to Moncton and we were headed…    read more.

from owen sound to trois-rivieres…

It sounded like we were dragging a chunk of Stonehenge behind us every time we hit the brakes. But that didn’t stop us from pulling into beautiful Owen Sound to play for the Otherfolk festival, which featured performances by bands like Elliott Brood and Bruce Peninsula. We were clearly outclassed, but the vibe was amazing and we watched Aaron Mangoff and The Morals play fantastic sets before we went to Rocky Raccoon’s to set up and play. The audience was amazing, giving a great singalong for “in your defense” and calling for an encore. The next day we woke up…    read more.
