autumn tour of ontario & quebec, with gabrielle papillon!

We’ve been lying low a bit for September and October, enjoying the autumnal goodness, apple cider, and occasional leaf-kicking adventure. Now it’s time to hit the road again and play some more music for wonderful folks, this time we’ll be doing a mix of duo and full band shows with a fellow folkie and great friend of ours: Gabrielle Papillon! We are very excited to be touring with Gabrielle in November, she’s a phenomenal singer-songwriter: multi-talented and award-winning to boot. So take a look at our tour schedule (handily posted below!) and if you can’t come to a show then…    read more.

REVIEW: Canadian Pop Country Show Off Harmonies

by Greg Jones, Ear to the ground music I found Graydon James and the Young Novelists how I find a lot of artists on the bountiful supply of new music that is bandcamp. Initially blown away by the songwriting and harmonies, I couldn’t wait to get a copy of In the Year You Were Born. I can safely say the album fulfills my high expectations. Jumping off from an uptempo opening track, “I was a young man’s son” has the ethereal hard-working ethic typical of the country music root James and company use as their base. It’s really the kind…    read more.

back from tour & in love with autumn

Touring is amazing, but we are glad to be home and ready to have a love affair with autumn. We enjoyed some old-fashioned east coast hospitality on our tour, and we’d like to say a big thank you to all the folks who shared a floor, a meal, a stage, or a sing-along with us along the way! Going on tour is like an extended marathon of good times, and it was fantastic to be able to share those times with such great people. Double kudos go out to our drummer Mike, his wife Eileen, and their 4-month-old daughter Broghan…    read more.

Review: newcanadianmusic.ca

REVIEW: in the year you were born The Young Novelists Toronto six-piece Graydon James & The Young Novelists offers a textbook example of how to do things right. This latest release is pure James Lee Burke, spinning miniature stories masterfully and evoking images of small town life, capturing the spirit of untainted optimism and delivering every song with the kind of smart sounding earthy-pop we’ve come to expect from Blue Rodeo. Graydon James and his cohorts have won widespread praise and the chatter about this one is likely to be more roar than whisper. The launch party is at The…    read more.

FEATURE: Graydon James & The Young Novelists Turn The Page

by Ken Kelly, The Musicnerd Chronicles Their music has earned comparisons to Blue Rodeo and the Band but make no mistake, Toronto-based roots band Graydon James and the Young Novelists are carving a path all their own. Following up a pair of 2011 releases, the group’s most recent full-length effort, In The Year You Were Born, has earned them widespread praise. Their songs have been deemed thoughtful and heartfelt while the band is also earning a reputation for their stellar live shows. As Graydon James and the Young Novelists have become busier over the last two years, potential life-changing decisions are also…    read more.

summertime on the east coast

Nothing says summer like getting in a van with limited AC with several sweaty humans and making some goddamned music!  If some crimes get solved along the way, all the better.  But this band actually began with a 2009 tour to the east coast in late August, and I’ll be swobbered in the klootch-sac if we don’t seem to get a hankering to head east in the late August of each and every year.  If you’ve never visited Atlantic Canada you are missing out on some of the friendliest folks on the planet.  We have always enjoyed an extreme level…    read more.

festival season arrives

I’ve been thinking about festivals recently, and not just because spring and summer are the de rigueur seasons for the majority of the delicious, sweaty, sun-soaked, and wonderful outdoor musical celebrations that bring folks from all ages and all callings to the trampled grass dance floor near the stage to shake their ya-yas. There are dozens of festivals in Toronto alone, not to mention the hundreds across Canada, and I’ve been thinking about what it takes to put on these festivals. Having been only peripherally involved (mainly as an enjoyer, and luckily enough as a sometime performer) I can very…    read more.

west coast minstrels

We are currently riding the rails, just outside of Jasper, and enjoying one hell of a good time! We’ve been playing on the train as part of VIA Rail’s On-board Entertainment program and it is a highly unique experience, to say the least. For one thing, crossing Canada by rail is fantastic and you really get a feel for the scope and sheer mass of this beautiful country. For another thing, showering on a train is one wild and woolly batch of hijinx! We’re looking forward to playing a couple of shows in Vancouver, and then getting back on the…    read more.
